Public Health Clinic & Communicable Disease Prevention

Communicable diseases are illnesses that can be spread from person to person and sometimes from animals to people. Healthcare providers and laboratories are required to report certain diseases and conditions to Public Health for case management and statistical purposes. Public Health uses this information to protect the community through communicable disease case investigations. In the case of certain diseases, such as measles and bacterial meningitis, Public Health works to ensure that a sick person receives treatment, and that friends and family are protected as well.

Our goal is to reduce the spread and limit the adverse effects of infectious diseases within our community.

Healthcare providers who need to report a suspected public health emergency should contact Public Health immediately at 530-527-6824 or if after hours, call the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office at 530-529-7900 and ask for the Public Health Emergency Contact.

Our Services Offered

Our department provides confidential and judgement-free services to help keep our community healthy. We offer testing, diagnosis, and treatment for many sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as education and resources to support safe practices. Regular sexual health screening is recommended for those who are sexually active. Testing is quick, easy, and an important step in protecting yourself and those you care about.
Testing offered:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Hepatitis C

Our department is equipped to treat many of the above infections and provided follow up care. We also offer partner services to help notify and support partners who may need testing or treatment.
We also have free condoms available in the lobbies of both our Red Bluff and Corning locations. Female and latex-free condoms are also available.

Our public health department provides tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment, testing, and treatment for both latent and active TB. Many employers, daycares, colleges, and other programs require TB testing for new employees, children entering programs, and students enrolling in college. We are here to help you complete required testing and provide care if needed. Our office does not provide physicals.

    • For individuals with a positive TB test, our department provides follow-up diagnostics (chest x-rays, sputum collection) to determine whether the infection is latent or active. If diagnosed with latent or active tuberculosis, we will work with you to create a treatment plan that works best for you.

For more information about tuberculosis, see the CDC’s website: https://www.cdc.gov/tb/about/index.html

Our public health department offers pregnancy testing and verification of pregnancy, as well as resources and referrals to programs and services that can help. We connect families to services such as Women, Infants & Children (WIC), Healthy Families Tehama, Behavioral Health Services, etc. Our goal is to give you the care, information, and support you need to make healthy choices for yourself and your family.

Our public health department has at-home COVID-19 kits available for free to the public. These kits are easy to use and give results in about 10-20 minutes, depending on the brand. Just follow the step-by-step instructions in the box. Testing is a fast and easy way to know if you have COVID-19 so you can protect your family and community and seek care if you are at higher risk for severe illness.
Using an unexpired COVID-19 test is strongly recommended to ensure the most accurate results. Expired tests are still valid if the control line appears as described in the manufacturer’s instructions. Always review and follow the directions included with your test kit for proper use.
For more information on COVID-19 testing, see the CDPH’s webpage on COVID-19 testing.

As required by California Code of Regulations, Title 17, our public health department investigates certain diseases and conditions reported by healthcare providers and laboratories. These include illnesses such as tuberculosis, measles, hepatitis, whooping cough, some sexually transmitted infections and foodborne diseases, among many others. By monitoring and following up on these reports, we work to prevent the spread of disease, protect the community, and connect people to the care and resources they need.
